Shropshire Sojourn, June 2026

Now we are well and truly settled in to coastal living in Kessingland it was time to get out and about in the motorhome again. We’ve always loved Shropshire for its hills, quirky towns and quietness so we planned an open-ended trip - which turned out in the end to be 10 days.

The first few days were roastingly hot with sleeping in what is essentially a metal box being a bit of a challenge! Despite that we had lovely days in historic Ironbridge, Shrewsbury and then the quirky Hawkstone Park Follies just to the north. Our visit to Shrewsbury Prison was superb and will linger long in the memory. Do go if you’re in the area. The whole town is fantastic with history around every corner, great walks beside the River Severn and lovely parks and gardens. We stopped overnight beside the Severn too the east of the town centre which was a great little spot.

Eventually the weather cooled a bit allowing us to walk along Wenlock Edge, visit Acton Burnell Castle and stay overnight on Co-op carpark in Church Stretton (not all park-ups are glamorous!). Having said that the campsite we stayed on at Wenlock Edge had one of the best views ever. 

With my health improving it was time to try my first hill in a while the climb up Caer Caradoc was a challenge I did surprisingly well. The views from there overlooking The Long Mynd are exceptional. 

We then moved on to one of our favourite towns - the slightly run-down but lovely Bishops Castle. I don’t know what it is about the place but it keeps drawing us back. Maybe it’s the beer at The Three Tuns?! This time we also found a superb bookshop cum coffee shop to while away and hour or two. 

From there we walked along the nearby Stiperstones, Bury Ditches Iron Age Fort and sleepy Clun with its quirky little museum, castle and historic Sun Inn. There’s a theme developing here! We managed a strenuous but rewarding walk along a stretch of the Offa’s Dyke Path before our last night at a campsite just outside Knighton.
