Around The Wash, 20 - 22 August 2025

I have been wanting to visit Kings Lynn to have a proper explore for some while so with the weather set fair we headed west for what turned out to be a 3 nighter.

Not wanting to get up too early but equally well wanting a full day out in Lynn we set off on Wednesday afternoon to spend the night at West Acre after stocking up on provisions. We love our little park-up spot there and managed some walking and a couple of Duration Brewery beers in The Stag in West Acre before settling in for the night.

The next day we were up and at it, getting into Kings Lynn with minimum fuss and parking up near The Walks to begin our long walk around the historic spots of the town. I’d picked up a leaflet detailing the walk a while ago and managed to combine that with a ‘Weird Norfolk’ walk as the two overlapped. We were very pleasantly surprised by just how much there was to see. From The Walks, Red Mount Chapel. Pilot Street, The Exorcists House, Trues Yard Fisherfolk Museum, The Tuesday Market Place, Custom House, Clifton House & Tower, Greyfriars Tower to Kings Lynn Minster, Hanse House and several haunted locations such as Devils Alley and the famous witches heart of local folklore. Combined with a nice lunch by the quayside and coffee in a rum emporium it was a fantastic day.

We retreated to the woods that night for an overnight at Sandringham and a walk in the forest there. The squirrels took great delight in dropping acorns onto the motorhome roof!

Belinda loves Dersingham Bog so we spent an extended period there the next morning walking and exploring the bog, heath and woodland. With the heather in full bloom it was an absolute picture. We also took in the beautifully restored railway station at Wolferton on our walk. After that it was into Lincolnshire for quick pop into Tydd Gote for me to gawp at some orchids before moving to the edge of The Wash north of Sutton Bridge for a rather different overnight spot. We really enjoyed it because it was in the flatlands of the fens which isn’t our normal type of place to stop. The twin lighthouses (one where Peter Scott used to live) guarding the entrance to the River Nene were an added attraction.

We spent Friday morning in nearby Wisbech (ticking off another town!) visiting the lovely National Trust property of Peckover House & Gardens and stocking up on a few bottles from the Elgoods Brewery shop at North Brink. Our verdict on the town? Apart from the North Brink area and its historic riverside houses don’t bother!
