The sooner we escape the better!

In my last post I aluded to the fact that one of the reasons for our impending vanlife was 'not wanting to play the game any more'. In recent weeks and months that feeling has grown and grown. Hopefully without getting too political (a little is inevitable!) I shall try to explain here how that has happened.

Let's face it, the current state of the UK is nothing to be proud of. The rich get ever richer and the poor ever poorer and corruption is rife. Our NHS and public services are on their knees through lack of funding and despite soaring costs we have a public transport system that is truly awful, polluted seas and rivers and ever increasing corporate greed. Foodbanks have become the norm and homelessness and poverty are on the rise. Many of our natural environments are so degraded as to be almost worthless for wildlife and our verges are covered in rubbish. Compared to when I first started birdwatching in the 1980s the drop in bird numbers is alarming.

Every time I have to deal with a company or corporation they offer appalling levels of service and hike prices to ridiculous levels. Everywhere you turn people are out to con you. Just today I've had vastly sub-standard goods delivered that had to go straight back and had to jump through so many hoops just to stop a company automatically renewing my breakdown cover after they decided to increase the price by 300%!

I hold out some hope that things might improve once we have had a general election this year but the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

Whilst adopting an alternative 'vanlifestyle' won't be a total escape from the state of things it will at least shield us from a lot of it (no rent, no council tax, no household bills, no rampant commercialism crap...) Depending on work we may even decide to do it earlier.

My apologies if this reads like a bit of a rant. Sometimes we all have to vent. Here's an idyllic and calming photograph!
