Off-grid in North Norfolk and a visit from the fam! 29 Sept - 1 Oct 2023

Friday and Saturday nights off-grid in North Norfolk as we continue to fine-tune our moho living!

Friday night was spent on the edge of Holt Country Park and Saturday night at Wiveton Downs just inland of Blakeney. Both were small rural carparks and they turned out to be some of the quietest and most peaceful nights we have spent in the motorhome. At Holt we were the only vehicle overnight and at Wiveton there was just one other van at the other end of the carpark.

As ever we spent our time walking and exploring nature and the local area. Holt Country Park is well known to us and we covered the woods of the country park as well as the heathland and boggy valleys of Holt Lowes finding plenty of fungi, plants and insects of interest.

At Wiveton we walked the elevated wooded ridge down to the village of Glanford and it's ford, church and shell museum. Picking up the local parish magazine I read the tide tables and discovered that the next tide was rather a high one. So we got up early the following morning and ventured down into Blakeney to witness the quay carpark and coast road completely flooded!

On the Saturday evening we had a visit from Hannah (Belinda's youngest), her partner Andy and little grandson Arlo who loved exploring the van!

Lessons learned this weekend:

  • We can easily go 'off-grid' with no electricity or facilities for at least 3 consecutive nights. Having a finite amount of power, water and gas does focus the mind for more frugal and sustainable living.
  • We need to be more adventurous with cooking in and outside the van and also research a few easy recipes. It's too easy to have a couple of glasses of wine followed by a cheese roll because we can't be botherd to cook proper food!
